Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt worked during the night shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could pursue her love of theater and literature during the day. DuVernay quickly became enthralled after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as a tool for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and influenced that she could express her thoughts through the art of. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news as an elementary school student. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury and look through their trash. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was assigned she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at a small production studio right after she graduated from school. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
